Jerel Worthy 2013 Green Bay Packers Evaluation and Report Card

Packers DE Jerel Worthy

Packers DE Jerel Worthy

1) Introduction: Jerel Worthy made it back from a late-season ACL injury suffered in 2012. He didn’t do anything upon returning, but simply making it back onto the field so soon was more than most people expected.

2) Profile:

Jerel Worthy

  • Age: 23
  • Born: 4/28/1990 in Huber Heights, OH
  • Height: 6’2″
  • Weight: 308
  • College: Michigan St.
  • Rookie Year: 2012
  • NFL Experience: 2 years

Career Stats and more

3) Expectations coming into the season: Get healthy. I don’t think anybody expected Worthy to play a snap, but he made it all the way back and saw some game action.

4) Player’s highlights/low-lights: Walking onto the field to play against the Vikings in week 12 — less than a year removed from a major ACL injury — is a very impressive highlight. We’ll find out next season if Worthy’s highlights go beyond returning from a serious injury.

5) Player’s contribution to the overall team success: It’s tough to contribute when you’re injured. If Worthy is to have a successful NFL career, it will probably come as a Mike Daniels type of player — someone who is explosive enough to rush the passer from the inside but might be a little undersized to anchor gaps in the run defense.

6) Player’s contributions in the playoffs: Worthy only played two snaps in the postseason.

Season Report Card:

(Incomplete) Level of expectations met during the season

(Incomplete) Contributions to team’s overall success.

(Incomplete) Contributions to team during the playoffs

Overall Grade:  Incomplete (kudos to Worthy for working to return so soon, but there isn’t enough there to give him a proper grade)

  1. An all too often dilemma for those trying to assess player performance. You have to play to get a grade. I am just hoping that all these guys come back and come back strong. Could be a good team going forward. As for Worthy, he happens to play a position of definite need for this team. Let’s hope for a 110% recovery.

  2. In the case of Worthy and even with the legit excuse via his injury and missing the season, his grade from his first season needs a huge jump to vindicate what he didn’t offer up in the categories evaluated on.

  3. Similar to what I wrote for Jones, Worthy needs to improve dramatically from year 1 to 2, just like Daniels did. If he can equal Daniels play (which should be possible given that he is physically more talented) he will be a good 2nd round contributor. GoPack!

  4. Unfortunately— Injury prone, may never see consistent playing time.

    • He had ONE injury how is that prone to anything. Try making a little sense when you comment. People might take you seriously if you do!

  5. Unless you’re a female basketball player, ACL tears are pretty hard to predict…. I have a hard time calling Worthy injury prone. Hopefully he gets on the field in good health and his play warrants his second round selection. GoPack!

    • NFLers are making miraculous recoveries from ACL injuries these days. Of course it has NOTHING to do with PEDs. No, no nothing at all.

Hopefully we will see that dynamo in the #99 jersey we saw in 2012.

  6. Just like D Jones, Worthy didn’t do much in his rookie year. Because of Worthy’s injury and lost 2013 season, both players will be entering 2014 as basically their 2nd year of play. This D drastically needs these 2 highly drafted players to take the next step and contribute next year. I’m leary of this happening, but I’m hoping for the best. It’s all we can do.

  7. Between Jones and worthy if only one turns out to be a stud and the other just ok, the line will be in good shape. Drafting D lineman is a crapshoot for most teams it seems.

  8. It seems we have enough O line guys on the team to find five that can play decent. Could maybe use another receiver, have lots of running backs, need a backup QB. So that leaves us to concentrate on DEFENSE. We seldom seem to rush the passer like other teams that disrupt A-rod if not put him down. So my concentration would be on defensive personnel & then trying to find a way to play with the speed & intensity of Seattle
